Why I Chose to Self Host WordPress

Today I want to discuss something that is CONSTANTLY being asked. “Why is it so important to Self Host? Should I Self Host with wordpress or not? What is Self Hosting?!” These questions get asked more than often in Boss Girl Bloggers. (The Facebook group I created + run)

Disclaimer: *Affiliate links are used. Read more here.

I have an answer to all of these questions! I am not saying I am an expert, but I am saying that switching to self-host servers, especially with siteground, has been one of the BEST decisions I have made for my blog! This is what has worked best for me, maybe it can work for you too!

Why I chose to self host my blog - the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org

What is Self Hosting?

Self hosting is exactly this: It’s when you own your domain and pay a company, such as siteground to allow you to make your domain (blog, website, etc.) available for the world to see. This company will “host” your website for you but you will have total control!

Ask yourself these questions!

  • Do you wish to pursue a career in blogging?
  • Do you wish to generate an income via blogging?
  • Is blogging more to you than just a hobby?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then it is time to make the switch to a self hosted wordpress blog! I can tell you from experience, it does make a difference! I will never go back!

Why You Should Self Host?

There are many reasons why you should be self hosting and not using wordpress .com , blogger, squarespace etc. First and furthermost, I can’t stress to you enough: WordPress .com is a waste of time and money! Please, PLEASE do not pay for premium or business plans with wordpress .com. I was extremely upset when I upgraded to premium. I still was unable to use plug ins, and I couldn’t use ads like (Google adsense etc.) Let me further explain why you should be self hosting.

Monetizing your blog is when you start using google adsense, affiliate links etc to start making money with your blog! This is a dream because who wouldn’t want to make money from home, doing something they love?! If you are using wordpress. com you are not self hosted and therefore using google adsense etc. is actually breaking wordpress .com’s rules, they only want you to use their ads! It’s important that you make the switch to self hosting for this reason. So in my opinion, if you are wanting to monetize your blog and start making some money, I would switch to the self host option.

Self hosted wordpress allows you to easily create a shop along with your blog with some easy to install + use plug-ins and easy coding! This is perfect for those who want to start a business as well as a blog. You can customize your shop just the way you like! Platforms like Squarespace make for a much more difficult time achieving this goal!

This is huge for me. I wanted to have the most control over my blog which is why I made the switch. This also goes for the domain as well. if your domain is (www.yoursitename .blogger .com or yoursitename .wordpress .com) then you DO NOT have owner ship over your blog.) So when you try to work with companies to do reviews or promote products, the brand might be more turned off by your blog/website because you do not own it. I wanted to make sure that I owned my domain because I do want to work with brands and come off as more “professional”.

If you aren’t paying for your blog, then chances are you do not have ownership of your blog. This can also mean that wordpress, wix, blogger can control your ads, give you limitations, and delete your blog if they ever think you have violated their standards. Everything you worked so hard for could potentially be wiped. If you are self hosted, all of your content is yours, it belongs to you, wordpress, blogger, wix, has no control or say over that! One of the main reasons why I love self hosting!

If you self host you can purchase a plan that has the perfect storage space needed for your blog! If you have a free blog via wordpress .com or blogger then chances are you will run out of storage space quickly! Nothing more frustrating than not being able to create the content you want with the graphics you want because your storage space is too little.

One of the main reasons why I spent money on premium wordpress .com was because I wanted to use plugins! You know, the share buttons, the SEO plugins, the social media buttons, the email list builder..All of those cool plug ins wordpress offers. Well, once I spent almost 100$ for premium I found out that it doesn’t even include plug ins! I spent all of that money for some extra “themes” for my blog. I was so upset!! This was ultimately when I demanded a refund and made the switch. I wanted to be able to install plug ins to help make my blog look appealing and professional. I knew that if I didn’t self host I would always have limitations and my blog would never get to where I want it to be.

WordPress offers thousands of different themes for you to choose from! Blogger is very limited on the amount of themes that they have to offer and same goes for Squarespace. It is difficult to design your blog exactly the way you want to on Squarespace. They only allow you to add ads in specific spots and custom coding to your header is just not possible. WordPress allows you so many different design options from multiple menu bars to scrolling pictures on the homepage! I am loving my wordpress design currently.

If you are thinking Squarespace, I would stay away because it is one of the most expensive options when it comes to monthly fees. WordPress .com has limitations and no access to plug ins unless you pay for their expensive business plan. Self hosting will get you everything that comes with the business plan and more for a CHEAPER cost!

Again with the more professional. I know you are probably rolling your eyes but, it’s true! Yes I understand that wordpress can be a little more tricky to understand and navigate but you are only benefiting yourself if you learn how to use it. Companies find that if you take the time to figure out how to use wordpress, your site will come off as more professional and more committed. If you want to blog and be successful, you need to put in the time and commitment. I will not sugar coat it, it is work! Lots and lots of hard work! But if you don’t take your blog seriously, neither will others!

What is SEO? It is Search Engine Optimization. You will get the best SEO via wordpress .org. I’m serious! If you aren’t using WordPress .org (which is a self hosted wordpress) chances are your SEO is going to lack compared to if you were to use a self hosted wordpress blog. If you want your posts to appear higher on search engines, it’s vital that you have a self hosted wordpress. This will allow you to get the best SEO advice, tools, and more! I use a plug in called YOAST and it has helped my SEO immensely! There are all sorts of SEO plugins that are available for self hosted wordpress blogs. SEO on squarespace is very difficult! Squarespace gives you limited options for descriptions to your pictures and site. WordPress is known for having amazing SEO features and tools.

In the blogging community there are a lot more wordpress users than anything else! So when you have questions about blogger, wix or squarespace, your questions might not get answered as quickly. You may have a more difficult time finding answers as well. The community of wordpress users is so large that you are almost always likely to find an answer immediately. There are SO many tutorials for wordpress that you could quickly learn how to use it! Also note that if you are thinking about squarespace, it is newer, so finding tutorials and information on squarespace can be difficult!

Unfortunately, the technical support for blogger isn’t as great as the technical support that you can receive from wordpress. If something major happens you are on your own because Blogger is owned by Google, you have to look up everything! Not to mention the support that you get from a self host team is incredible!!!

But I Don’t Want to Spend the Money!

I know that financially self hosting can be an issue, BUT I am telling you right now you will make it back eventually if you keep at your blog! Not to mention, you can start up with siteground today for only 3.95$ a month through my link! That is only 48$ for the entire year! Compared to some self host companies this is cheapo depot!

Also note if you purchase between September 1st and September 6th you can get hosting for only $2.95! That’s an amazing deal!!!

But, I was in your shoes at one point so it’s okay to save for it! Put aside 5-10$ whenever you can and you will have the money in no time!

Can I Transfer My Blog?

ABSOLUTELY! Another reason why I swear by siteground! They will actually assist you and make your transfer to self hosting as painless as possible! When I started up with siteground I messaged their support team and let them know that I am not tech savvy. I told them I wanted to transfer from wordpress .com to a self hosted wordpress .org. They instantly responded with helpful tips and then they actually went on and transferred my site for me at no additional cost. I was amazed! I was so pleased with their support team. They are always helpful and quick to respond!

Server Speed

I quickly wanted to mention that I never have much trouble when it comes to server speed or server crashes with siteground. My site has always been up and running and my load time is pretty good!

  1. You have freedom over adding ads, monetization, and making money via your blog if you Self Host.
  2. Appear more professional to others and companies who you may want to work with in the near future if you Self Host.
  3. Self hosting allows you to have no limitations for plug ins etc.
  4. You have total control over your blog, the fear of deletion is not a fear anymore when you are self hosting.
  5. Self hosted wordpress is the best option for when it comes to design + SEO.
  6. Siteground is only 3.95$ a month or 2.95$ a month if purchased between Sept 1-6th.
  7. Server speeds with siteground are excellent with barely any server crashes.
  8. Siteground will help you transfer your blog with ease.
  9. The support team from siteground is fast at responding and will give you the most helpful and informative answers to all of your questions.

I really hope that this has helped you with all of your “Why should I self host?” questions! I’m not trying to force anyone into anything, I am just being 100% honest with my experience blogging thus far. I love to share with you what I have found to work the best for me! I wouldn’t rave about self hosting if I didn’t think it is the best decision you could make for your blog and your future career with blogging!

Hi Ell! Thank you for this.
One question, my blog is hosted by WordPress.com and I have my own domain, 242BlqRze.com through WordPress.

If I was to switch over, would I have to pay Siteground for hosting and WordPress for my domain? Would I have to pay for two separate host and plans?

Great question! I was the same way and was able to keep my domain that I already purchased from wordpress .com and transferred it over with me so I didn’t have to pay extra for another or new domain (:
