A Note for the One Trying to do it ALL

A note for the one trying to do it all! Here's a boost of motivation & reassurance that breaks are necessary.

Let me guess, you’re reading this because lately you feel as if you have been trying to do it ALL and yet you still can’t get it done? You put all of your effort into something, and yet here you are still trying to make it WORKBeen there, done that, and yet HERE I AM STILL TRYING. 

Words to myself: STOP. 

As bloggers we are always told that we can turn this “thing” into a full time career, that we can make things happen, & that we can be completely happy working from anywhere in the world, blah blah blah. . . YES .. that may be true, but guess what – it takes time, patience, and work..


I am SO SO SO DAMN GUILTY of this…

A little about me:

  • I created Boss Girl Bloggers, a group of over 29,000 female entrepreneurs and bloggers. I run this group full time, by myself, for FREE. I could have moderators, other admins etc. help me out buuuuut I have put SO MUCH time and work into this group that I just can’t bring myself to let go of managing. (bad I know).
  • I also manage my EllDuclos + BossGirlBloggers social medias, as well as Pinterest managing my own Pinterest and several other clients.
  • I have this blog AND I am in the process of creating a second website specifically for Boss Girl Bloggers. 
  • I also blog coach clients weekly
  • AND I started an oil biz on the side…

This might not sound like a lot, but OH HOT DAMN it is MORE than a lot for one person to handle. I have been going out of my damn mind, barely finding the time to work on my own content.

Going into blogging full time and making money blogging, I didn’t really think of it as a “hard” job, but the truth is, IT IS MORE THAN JUST WRITING.

It is:

  • Writing
  • Editing
  • Rewriting
  • Graphic design
  • Promoting & Marketing
  • Finance management
  • Social media management
  • Constant emails & constant messages that you want to make sure you reply to so that you don’t piss anyone off.
  • It’s CONSTANTLY being on your computer, or on your phone.

I wake up – work and it doesn’t stop until my head hits the pillow for bed. AND EVEN THEN IT DOESN’T STOP! I am constantly thinking, my brain is on high speed all day and all night. I actually was recently seen by my doctor because of insomnia that I developed once I went full time with my blog…

Wow, this all sounds like so much fun right? … 

Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely LOVE blogging, I love writing, I love social media managing, and I love meeting and talking with new people! BUT GUESS WHAT…I CAN’T DO IT ALL. 

I am starting to learn that I need to STOP. I need to take a step back. And I need to take care of myself.

I am not saying to stop blogging. I am not saying to stop all the side biz hustles. But I am saying, to stop taking on more than you can handle.

You may think you are superwoman, but I learned the hard way… WE AREN’T. We are damn strong, tough, independent, hard busting a** working females, but we need breaks too!

Our body needs REST, if we don’t give ourselves rest, we become agitated, mentally and physically exhausted, depressed, unhappy, sick, and slowly we stop loving things that we once loved with all our hearts.

So pause, remember why you started blogging, remember that you started blogging because it made you happy, not because you want all the money in the world. It’s because you want to share and inspire others through your words. 

If you aren’t finding the time to do so – then you are doing TOO MUCH.

I have learned my lesson and I think it’s time for me to have a mental reset. I am always 100% honest with you all. And this is me being honest. I took on more than I could handle and now my mental health and my own blog content is being jeopardized because of it. Taking on more than we can handle can lead to giving up… This is not me. I will NOT give up, but I will admit that I need to let go of things that I can’t handle. Which means I may not be able to do all that I want to do right this moment, but maybe down the line I can pick it back up.

I know I am not the only one who has ever felt this way, so if you are feeling this way too, this is your note, your reminder, to take a damn break. Reset your mind and STOP taking on more than you can handle. Your mental health, your body, your life is more important than the stress of trying to do too much at once.

& I think my biggest lesson learned is, it’s okay to ask for help.

    I love your work Ell! You are truly an inspiration. I am trying so hard to learn this blogging “thing” and trying to launch another blog myself, while managing everything on my freaking own. I was actually reading a short book on how to not get burned out on blogging because I’m obviously struggling. You do what you need to do because if you’re not 100% it’s not worth losing your health over. You have so may people that adore you and won’t abandon you because you took a breather.

    I needed this so bad! I just started my own blog a while ago (andthenemma.com), and as a high school student, I’ve really been trying to exceed my own expectations all this time. Between my blog, applying for college, work, and other extracurriculars, I’ve really learned that I needed to step back and breathe for a minute. This post was just what I needed!

    I definitely needed to hear this I have been so burnt out lately. One day, I woke up and decided I needed to STOP and take a break from it. I enjoyed my 2 weeks away from social media. It was good to just take of ME and not get so caught up in the process. Going forward, I have a clearer mind & will be utilizing my plan to keep balance.

    I absolutely agree with all your points Ell!

    Blogging is a joy but also a huge responsibility and it must be your passion, otherwise what’s the point?

    It takes a lot of time, effort, patience and above all perseverance!

    Things do not happen overnight but if you work on it everyday, then you’ll see the fruit of your labor later on 😉

    Definitely take a break or time away as needed, otherwise you’ll get burned out and have no energy to continue.

    Taking a mental health pause to rest, recharge and live, truly live is priceless!

    Keep going no matter what.

    Excellent article Lauren, it’s heartbreaking to see bloggers/business owners get burned out because of unrealistic expectations. This business is tough, you have to work hard and be prepared for the rollercoaster. So good of you to offer such realistic counsel for anyone interested in getting started!
