How to Create a Successful Blog & Turn it into a Career
When I first started blogging I looked up multiple resources and websites to help me create my content and succeed. I decided to put together a blog post for you all that contains every tip under the sun to help you create a successful blog from start to finish! I find that when the info is all in one place it makes it a lot easier!
How To Start A Blog
First things first, you need a domain and a host. When I first started blogging I foolishly created a wordpress . com blog rather than self hosting. If you don’t plan on turning your blog into a business then this is a perfect option for. However, if you do plan on growing your following and turning blogging into a career, I recommend you self host! Others will also mention “Would it be worth it to get the business plan on wordpress . com ?” In my honest opinion… NO. It’s over priced and doesn’t give you enough flexibility to do what you need to do!
So … let’s talk self hosting. You are probably thinking… Who should I use as a host? I use Site Ground and I absolutely love it. The best part about them is that their servers are fast. I am always noticing readers letting me know how quick my site loads for them unlike other sites. I also never have errors or issues with my commenting or blog posts.
When I first switched to wordpress . org from . com I was very overwhelmed. I had no idea how to move my content from one server to another. Site ground has 24/7 help support who messages you promptly and efficiently! They transferred my site for me at no additional charge. I was so impressed! It was so easy to make the switch! Check them out here.
* When it comes to choosing a domain make sure it is unique but not hard to forget! *
MUST HAVE PLUG INS (ones I swear by)
- Sumo / Convert Kit / Mailer Lite: I recommend using one of these awesome email list plug ins. These plug ins help to grow your email list/ subscribers. It is so important that you are growing your email list to have a successful business! You want to be able to keep in contact with your subscribers and update them with the latest. SUMO is also my favorite because you can add share icons to each blog post! It’s so important to make sure your readers have the option to share your posts whenever necessary!
- Akismet Anti-Spam: This is a life saver. I get on the daily, spam comments that are annoying. This anti spam block helps to block me from getting any spam comments. Instead the comments are sent to a spam folder. Makes such a difference! I was so sick of reading spam comments and sorting through them all of them.
- Instagram Feed: I love this plug in because it adds my Instagram feed and a follow button on my homepage. This makes it easier for my readers to connect with me on other social media platforms.
- Yoast SEO: This is such a vital plug in for me! This plug in helps give me tips on how to fix my blog post to make it more readable & more search engine optimized. I don’t like to post my blog posts unless I have the green light from Yoast. I want to make sure that my posts will be able to get the most reach from search engines.
- Google Analytics/Jet Pack: This will help keep track of your site stats and all that jazz!
Facebook groups have helped me produce so much traffic to my blog. I wrote a whole blog post on which Facebook groups to join here
I also host my own Facebook group to help boss girl bloggers succeed! In this group you also have the opportunity to collab and be featured on my blog!
When it comes to Facebook groups, make sure that you are engaging! If you don’t engage and remain idle, then you are really defeating the purpose. Most Facebook groups will have daily threads where you can interact and promote. Take advantage of these threads! The more you interact within these groups, the more engagement you will notice on your blog and social media accounts.
Pinterest & Group Boards
When it comes to promoting my blog, I love to do so through Pinterest! I created a guide on how I am able to get 1 million views or more a month on my Pinterest. Since that post about a month ago, my monthly Pinterest views went up by almost 1 million! You can check out this guide here.
My click through rate from Pinterest is higher than with Facebook! That just goes to show you how vital using Pinterest is for my blog.
BOARD BOOSTERS: I definitely recommend joining board boosters. Board boosters allows you to schedule pins as well as campaigns. The campaigns will post scheduled pins to all of your group boards allowing you to gain the most traffic from Pinterest. Join here.
Create A Consistent Schedule / Dedication
Keeping your blog on a consistent schedule is so important! The more often you are blogging, the better results you will see. I like to post every 2 days. I try my absolute best to keep up with this schedule. I find that planning my blog week out every Sunday helps to maintain my consistency. If you are dedicated and take your blog seriously, so will your readers. Don’t take breaks or time off. Dedication is key! Don’t give up even if you feel as if you aren’t getting the stats you want. It will come, patience is mandatory for success.
To tell you just what I mean, & this may sound crazy but, I will stay up until 4am or 5am just working on my blog and engaging with others. I take my blog seriously. Whenever I have free time I spend it trying to better my business.
I know I always mention style collective but it’s because the support from the girls on this site is incredible! I have grown my Instagram following and formed some great friendships thanks to Style Collective! If you haven’t joined yet I would definitely recommend it! My favorite part is that you can create meet ups with other fashion/beauty bloggers in your area! It’s a great way to grow and find support. You can also check out how I grew my Instagram by 2,000 in less than 2 months here.
Guest Post / Collaborate
This is a great way to get yourself out there and noticed. Guest posting or collaborating for another blogger is so helpful when it comes to driving traffic to your blog. It’s important to be thankful that you were given this opportunity. When you do guest post or collaborate be sure to not go ghost on the host. Keep in contact and show support. They appreciate it more than you know and it makes you a good guest post candidate!
Make sure to engage and interact on other bloggers’ posts. This shows that you are personable and are supporting. Bloggers love to support one another! If you share the love, you will most likely receive the love back. Stick to blogs that are in your niche to attract readers and subscribers! Make sure your comments are adding to the conversation. The more personal you get with the blog post, the better. Actually read the post and know what you are talking about when commenting. Being supportive and informative goes a long way. Believe me!
Now let’s talk about earning some side income? Because we are boss babes.
Here are some of my go – to favorite ways to earn side cash while blogging!
Share A Sale – shareasale.com Which is an affiliate program and allows you to earn extra cash!
Amazon Affiliate Program – Another goodie!
Shop Style Collective – This one is one of my favorites! You can also use this one with Pinterest! Amazing!
Google Ad Sense – Everyone swears by them!
Create an E book Or Digital Product – This is the best way to create a passive income online. Create a product one time and sell it multiple times!
Make sure you are being 100% you. Your readers will turn into subscribers if you are creating content that reflects who you are. If you are passionate in your work then your readers will become passionate too.
Throughout your blogging career there may come a time where you feel as if you want to stop, give up, and just quit. You may think you are wasting your time, that you won’t be able to get where you want to be.
The thing is…it takes time. Success doesn’t happen over night. If you are loving what you are doing the success will follow. As long as you are doing something you love then I believe you already won.
